• I bought this calculator specifically because it displayed fractions vertically instead of sideways as shown in the Amazon picture attached. I’ve also attached a picture of the calculator I received and how the fractions are displayed sideways. This is not what I expected and I will need to return it. Great Price for the standard scientific calculator though.

1.Absolutely wonderful calculator. I originally ordered this calculator as a backup to my TI-36x Pro for the California PE Survey exam and ended up using this solely because of the degree/minute/second (°'") button. Instead of having to scroll to a menu to find the degree symbol, then minute symbol or second symbol, like in the TI-36x pro, it's all incorporated into that one button and it also converts to decimal degrees if you'd like. Here's an example:

Convert 5°17'36" to decimals.

On the TI-36x Pro: Enter 5 -> MATH -> DMS -> 1, 17 -> MATH -> DMS -> 2, 36 -> MATH -> DMS -> 3. Calculator spits out the answer = 5.29.

On the Casio Fx-115 ES PLUS: 5 -> °'", 17 -> °'" , 36 -> °'", then press °'" one more time. Answer = 5.29.

That °'" button saves so much time!

Besides my rant about this little button, the calculator performs all the calculations very quickly and is pretty fast at solving iterative formulas once you learn how to do it in the manual. The only caveat of this calculator is that it's a bit too lightweight. When you start punching the numbers quickly, the calculator starts sliding. I often have to hold the calculator in my hand to ensure I'm entering the numbers correctly. The buttons are also a bit flimsy but its more of an aesthetic than a functional issue. Still, you can't go wrong with this calculator! Highly recommended.

2. I feel like Casio should be paying me for the amount of talking I do about this calculator. First off, I've owned the fx-115ES for about 2 years now and love it. I love it so much that I've not only recommended it to almost anyone who will listen to me but bought it for two of my friends for their birthdays. When I found out there was a PLUS version of this calculator I was more excited than any one person should be about a calculator, and I didn't even know what the plus stood for. Turns out it's a bunch of small things that we math majors really appreciate; lines over repeating decimals, gcd and lcm, remainders (for modular arithmetic), and a bit more memory than its predecessor. BUT IT'S PREDECESSOR WAS ALREADY AMAZING, so basically, this calculator is amazing plus.

For you calculus students out there that need a scientific calculator for exams: this calculator solves systems of linear equations (with up to 3 variables), quadratics, cubics, does matrix inversion, addition/subtraction, and multiplication, gives exact answers (sin(pi/4)=sqrt(2)/2), and is just, in general, a super easy calculator to use. I've been pimping Casio out for a while now, but seriously, for $15 this is the BEST investment you can make in your math education.

This calculator still works like a dream and beats everything on the market. As a math instructor, I've seen probably every scientific calculator out there- certainly all of the TI's- and not one of them even comes close. One of the most important features I didn't mention in my original review was its ability to evaluate definite integrals and also derivatives at a point! That's a crazy feature for a scientific calculator!! I feel just as passionate today about this calculator as I did 5 years ago- do yourself a favor and buy it!

Review of this product.

1. At first glance, fx-991EX looks like a modernized version of fx-115ES PLUS. However, it has some shortcomings, compared to the predecessor:

1) Missing functions: LCM, GCD, Remainder division, Recurring decimals, and Product calculation - I have no idea why it was necessary to remove these important functions, so this is definitely a downgrade and a disappointment! Moreover, it turns out these features are available on some foreign versions of the same calculator, which leaves me wondering why the Casio marketing decided to drop them specifically from the U.S. version.
2) Usability: numbers are displayed in smaller font, which is harder to read; also the shift functions are painful to read on the black, textured, and somewhat reflective background.

At the same time, the new model has several obvious advantages over fx-115ES PLUS, such as:
1) a much faster processor (which is obvious when calculating integrals)
2) a new "QR" feature that can display graphs on your smartphone
3) a new "OPTN" button that can save you time
4) a separate "x" variable button that saves time
5) improved memory recall feature that shows all variables on one page
6) spreadsheet model

Compared to the leading scientific calculators made by other brands (most notably Sharp and TI), my biggest pet peeve about Casio is that IT LOSES ALL THE HISTORY AS SOON AS THE POWER IS TURNED OFF. This is by far the biggest reason I stopped using Casio at work. As an engineer, I want to be able to return to the same formula I was working on after my calculator turned off due to inactivity. This should be THE most basic feature for any advanced engineering calculator, and I find it mind-boggling that the Casio marketing keeps ignoring it.

Other very useful and time-saving features that I would really like to see in future Casio calculators are: 1) a way to store and recall a few frequently used formulas, and 2) being able to jump to the beginning and end of the formula, e.g. by pressing Shift-Left and Shift-Right.

If Casio addresses my concerns mentioned above, I will be glad to consider this brand again.

------ Really, Casio? That's the best you've got? ---------

This calculator has a beautiful screen, it's extremely fast, and it's mathematical chops are very good - many scientific calculators can't handle 4x4 matrices and 4-variable systems of equations, and it's accurate to more places than a ti-36x for integrals, etc. However, on usability, this thing falls flat:

- All history/recall is lost, including spreadsheet data, when changing modes or powering off (which happens automatically after 10 minutes) ... this is pretty much a deal killer for me, moving this thing into the 'unusable' category. Taking a test and your calculator times out? History is gone. Need to do some matrix or vector math? History is gone. Seriously awful.
- In calculate mode, only one calculation/equation at a time is displayed. Although you can 'rewind' through prior calculations and edit them (until you change modes, at least), it's not a 'scrolling' display - you flip through prior expressions one at a time. TI has achieved this on lesser hardware with the TI-36X, so the fact that Casio can't do it on this obviously very capable hardware platform is kind of pathetic.
- I know it's very Casio, and I didn't factor this into my rating since it's just their 'style', but I'm surprised that Casio is hanging on to the archaic 'mode' concept for things like complex numbers and vectors. Why aren't these integrated into the primary 'calculate' feature? This would be less painful if the various modes retained their data when you switched away from them.

All in all, I'd have given this a four-star rating if it retained history between modes and after powering off and had a slightly nicer history scrollback feature, and an easy 5 if it integrated functionality from the stats, matrix, complex, and vector modes into the main 'calculate' mode.

Next time around, Casio, do all of that and I'll be quite happy ... and if you introduce a solar scientific calculator with some basic CAS features (I couldn't care less about graphing, and hope you avoid programmability for the sake of maintaining NCEES acceptance), you'll have a devotee for life.

Review of this product.

1. I’m a math teacher, and I had a class set of these. Through years in use, I ended up with fewer than I needed. The other calculators I filled in with were harder to use, I got tired of kids arguing about who got the “good” calculators, so I decided to get more of these.

(My daughter is studying physics in college and this is the calculator she keeps on her desk.)

2. I can't for the life of me figure out how to put the equal sign for an equation without it solving the equation. And, I cannot figure out how to put a greater or less than sign < or >. Read the online manual (pdf) and still can't figure it out. I need to take a class just to learn how to use the darn thing. It's nice but not easy to use.... and not having a physical manual, in the paper really sucks and is not convenient.

3. I had to talk my daughter into trying this calculator, as it wasn't a popular choice in her class, but she loves how she can put full formulas into the calculator with fractions and decimals. Amazing ability to input long formulas too. Great, cost-effective choice for non-graphing calculator.

4. Online operating procedures are written poorly.

In many cases very generic and cannot operate
as written. I spent two days trying the different
functions and some do not respond as written.
Some of the easy operations now take two or more
keystrokes to operate as compared to earlier versions
(El501x). This was probably done to allow more complex functions.
The D1-D3 memory keys don't contain the final results as I hoped it would. It's a lengthy process.
You can't just type D1. The sine x
Tablet mode was a complete waste of time.
In many cases, it takes too many keystrokes, if you can get it to function.
The plastic case and keys seem not as durable as the EL502x.
I’m about ready to turn this back to Amazon.
